Low Visibility Lighting Project
Washington Dulles International Airport
Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority
Chesapeake installed a complete low visibility lighting system in support of the Surface Movement Guidance Control System (SMGCS) across all three (3) present runways at Washington Dulles International Airport.
The general scope of work included over 25,000 LF of 4-way 4” underground ductbanks, 13,000 LF of associated 2” and 4” underground conduit, and 2000+ LF of bored conduit under existing runways and taxiways. In addition the project called for 130+ various sized manholes, handholes, frames and covers. Modifications to all three (3) underground Airfield Lighting Vaults were required, as well as the installation of custom designed SMGCS Field Control Units along with all associated control cabling, fiber optic cabling and computer programming. This project required the removal and reinstallation of 2000+ square yards of concrete and asphalt pavement. This work was all performed over a two year period while the airport runways were kept in full operation.
